How to redact a PDF properly (a black box is not enough)

It happens to law firms, ministries and NGOs: a "redacted" PDF is published, someone selects the black boxes, copies, and the hidden names appear. A rectangle drawn on top does not delete the text underneath. Real redaction removes the content itself.

Step by step

  1. Open Redact PDF and drop the document.
  2. Search for what must disappear: names, ID or phone numbers, email addresses. Every match is highlighted.
  3. Review the boxes, add or remove areas by hand if needed.
  4. Apply redaction. The affected pages are rebuilt so the hidden text no longer exists, and document properties (author, title) are cleared.

Good to know

  • Test the result: open the redacted PDF, select over a black box and paste. Nothing should come out.
  • Useful for beneficiary lists, HR files, case notes and documents published under freedom of information.
  • The document is processed on your device, which matters precisely because it is sensitive.

Questions

Can the redaction be undone?

No. The text is removed from the rebuilt pages, not just covered.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

For scans, draw the boxes by hand; the page image is rebuilt so the covered area is gone.
