How to remove a password from a PDF you can already open

Banks, payroll systems and government portals often send PDFs locked with a password, usually your date of birth or an account number. That is fine once, but annoying when you open the file every week, and many tools refuse to merge, compress or sign a protected PDF. If you know the password, you can save a copy without it in a few seconds.

Open the tool: Unlock PDF

Step by step

  1. Open the Unlock PDF tool on Convert Magician.
  2. Drop the protected PDF. It is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
  3. Type the password you normally use to open the file. If the file opens without a password and only blocks printing or copying, leave the field empty.
  4. Download the unlocked copy. Keep the original if you may need the protected version later.

Good to know

  • This tool does not crack or guess passwords. If you do not know the password, ask the sender for it or for an unprotected copy.
  • Once unlocked, the copy can be opened by anyone who gets it. Remove the password only on files you keep on your own devices.
  • Need to send the file securely afterwards? Use Protect PDF to add a new password of your choice.
