How to password-protect a PDF before emailing it

Email is convenient, but attachments get forwarded, stored in shared inboxes and synced to phones. For a contract, a CV with personal details, a payslip or a scanned ID, a password on the PDF means only the person who has the password can open it, wherever the file ends up.

Step by step

  1. Open the Protect PDF tool on Convert Magician.
  2. Drop your PDF. It is encrypted in your browser; neither the file nor the password is uploaded.
  3. Type a strong password. Optionally restrict printing, copying or editing.
  4. Download the protected PDF and attach it to your email. Send the password through a different channel, such as a text message or a phone call.

Good to know

  • Never put the password in the same email as the attachment. That defeats the purpose.
  • Use a phrase of several words rather than a short code. Avoid dates of birth, which are easy to guess.
  • If you forget the password, the file cannot be recovered. Keep the original or store the password safely.

Questions

How strong is the protection?

The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption. All modern PDF readers can open it with the password.

Can the recipient remove the password later?

Yes, once they know it they can save an unprotected copy. Protection controls who can open the file, not what a trusted recipient does afterwards.

Is my password sent to your server?

No. Encryption runs in your browser, so the password is never sent anywhere.
